Operation Christmas Card Class

This Saturday from 10:00 - 12:00 I will be teaching 4 quick Christmas card techniques. The class is to promote Operation Christmas Card, a program which sends Christmas cards to the men and women of our armed services who are stationed overseas. There will be plenty of time to make multiples of each type of card so we hope that you will choose to donate half of your cards.

There are not too many supplies needed for this class:

  • Value pack of cards
  • 2 pieces white cardstock
  • 4 pieces red cardstock
  • 2 pieces green cardstock
  • 1 border punch or scalloped scissors
  • Red and green ink for stamping
  • 1 set holiday stamps
  • Acrylic block for stamping
  • 12" paper trimmer
  • Paper adhesive
  • Black pen
  • Scissors
  • Black or brown ink pad for distressing
  • Foam Adhesive
  • Notepad for note taking

The joy of this class is that it is even more fun to take with a friend. You can share all the supplies needed (except for the paper and the paper cutter) and have twice the fun!

If red and green are not your first choice (or you just want to stand out from the crowd) feel free to bring other color combinations. And Operation Christmas Card doesn't only collect Christmas cards. Alternate cards for other December celebrations will also be gratefully accepted. Cards for Yule, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa etc, are also needed.

This is a wonderful program for our troops but if you do not want to craft your own Christmas cards (or just don't have the time) you can always bring some store bought cards (with handwritten sentiments) for donation. There will be a donation box in the front of the store. Please donate cards with unsealed envelopes. And remember, if you have created a card in Spanish, French or German, please list this on the outside of the card. Michael's will be collecting cards for Operation Christmas Card through the first week of November. This is also a wonderful class / Boyscout / Girlscout / Brownie / service project.

If you will be unable to attend this event but still want to learn the techniques covered in this class, another class will be scheduled at the store with another instructor on the 22nd from 12:00 - 2:00. We will also be scheduling a crop night for later in the month.

Temari Ball Class in October

In Friday nights in October we are planning on scheduling a temari ball class.  Temari balls are a traditional Chinese handicraft that were introduced to Japan approximately 600 years ago. Originally a way for the daughter's of the aristocracy to show their needle skills, the temari ball became a children's toy and traditional new years symbol of goodwill. Now you can learn this deceptively simple craft.

Class will be held on Friday nights in October from 6:30 - 8:30. We will be creating 4 designs over our four week class. These make really excellent Christmas tree ornaments but are beautiful displayed year-round in a shallow bowl. Previous sewing or embroidery experience is not required. This class is excellent for the novice sewer. Class will cost $25.00 for the four week run.

Materials needed for this class will be:
~At least 4 styrofoam balls (between 2 - 3" size)
~1-2 skeins of yarn
~2-4 spools of thread similar in color/tone to the yarn (this is a great chance to get rid of the "mystery thread" in the back of your collection.)
~an assortment of embroidery floss (if you don't already have embroidery floss, any pack of multiple colors will do. You will need at least 6 half-skeins of colors to get started.)
~a package of pearl headed pins (at least 2 colors)
~set of needles appropriate for working with yarn
~Piece of scrap paper
~Scissors
~Pen/pencil

Optional matierals:
~Metallic thread / embroidery floss for accents
~1/8"-1/4" accent ribbon (if creating Christmas tree ornaments)
~thimbol
~seam ripper
~pincushion

Crop Night Coming Up: Saturday September 17th 2011

On Saturday, September 17th from between the hours of 1:00 and 8:00 PM, Michael's Fleming Island will be having a crop event. For only $5.00 you will have the opportunity to scrapbook and create to your heart's content using Michael's equipment. Come for as little or as long as you'd like. I will be hosting the crop from 4:00 to 8:00 that day. I have some special ideas for origami figures to teach while I'm there, but if you have any suggestions, please speak up and leave a comment or send me an email.

For anyone who has never attended a crop night, this is a chance to get together and work on your scrap-booking and paper-crafting projects. You bring your own photos, paper and embellishments. Michael's provides the space, specialty tools and expertise. Best of all, we clean up afterwards! Crop nights are a great chance to get together with a group to share ideas and experiences. This is also a great excuse to get together with crafty friends, family, and co-workers.

As origami instructor I will be providing a new twist on the experience. I will be there to teach you some simple ways to incorporate origami into your scrapbooks. Can't wait to see you there!
